My Story

My name is Lisa. I am the founder and creator of Ohana Wellness.

When I was little I was obsessed with fitness and the human body. I tried anything and everything to be strong. I did workouts on the TV – from Gilad to Denise Austin. When the Olympics came on every 4 years I would watch in wonder at the physical capabilities of athletes and would try to ‘work out’ more. Not being a natural athlete in any shape or form, I just figured I could be strong and capable. I LOVED Arnold Swartzenager and Sylvester Stallone movies because you could see human musculature so much more precisely.

I probably should have gone to school for something related to the human body, but instead went for finance and management. ;-). I did the college thing then worked in Boston in the corporate world. It was extremely stressful, very male dominated where none of my co workers had families, and long hours to work for people we never saw. I did that for 8 years while taking more classes for my MBA (never finished that since I realized it wasn’t my passion), started having children and felt pretty depleted in that work environment. I always felt there was more I could be doing that was truly heart centered meaningful and not a rat race feel.

When my oldest son was almost 2 years old, he ended up getting sick with an illness that almost took his life. I know it sounds dramatic, but we were at the mercy of doctors, poor decisions, the unknown future, and many blood transfusions to keep him alive until we had more answers. Luckily he grew out of it and is thriving in college.

It was a MASSIVE eye opener for us as parents to little children. We wanted to do better and be better. That ordeal taught us a lot about prayer, faith, trust, self advocating and understanding how the human body really works. It led me down a path of wanting to 1)do something in life that made a difference and 2) figure out how to help ourselves BEFORE something like this happens and ends up being an emergency.

This started my path in understanding everything I could about well rounded wellness. I became certified in Personal Training, Reiki and then a Yoga Certification. I really stuck to the Yoga. It had helped me personally during the first class I took (from the TV at the time). It happened that I had a series of being hit by cars that caused enough head injuries causing ticks, headaches, and memory issues. I spent years overcoming that and understanding, testing and theorizing the way the brain works and how to override the sensory to more normal signaling AND how to rewire the brain pathways since some were damaged.

(On a side note, in 2023 I was struck head on by a vehicle and had more physical problems – than brain- that I overcame with knowledge I have acquired through the years. In the big picture, although it was painful, I made a quick recover overall and found that my extensive knowledge of the body, healing, the brain, and nervous system yet again came in handy. I also had tools that accelerated my healing which I now carry at the wellness center).

Back to yoga…I started my first yoga space in Florida and it was magical. To have something that was my own, to be able to see a tiny client base (my first space was tiny). I was also able to manage the yoga at the Wellness Center associated with the hospital and it felt so good to run something of importance.

After 3 years we moved back to New Hampshire in 2009 and since then have been teaching yoga in different locations for the community. My Ohana. My family. I have built the absolute best community of friendships, camaraderie, and mutual learning and love for wanting to have wholeness in wellness. To be free from pain, and to understand the ways you can manage your habits with small action steps where you are in charge of how you feel and what information you know. It’s so empowering to have autonomy over your own life and how you want it to unfold and take grace in your actions. Eating well, having good quality water matters, getting sunlight, being able to regulate your breath, understand your nervous system and how we move is all part of Ohana.

Through the years I have created a lifestyle and wellness tracker that allows us to keep track of our daily health habits, written children’s books about my visually impaired chicken that taught us so many lessons on life, make sourdough bread that is sold in stores, have a yoga studio in Contoocook, have online courses that anyone can learn from, and have a wellness clinic with devices that complement and try to mimic nature for healing. Everything is interwoven in the miracle of life. Healing is yoga, yoga is healing. We are all family on this planet trying to get by with the most easeful life possible.
